Putting the Pieces Back Together Again

I am a new parent with two young boys.  They are just now enjoying books and nursery rhymes and the other day I read to them the classic “Humpty Dumpty”.  For those of you unfamiliar with the children’s poem, it reads as follows:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king’s horses
and all the King’s men
couldn’t put Humpty together again!

This is quite depressing!  This is no hope offered at the end. What is left are broken pieces of egg shells and a shattered life…in addition to very disappointed children listening to the story.  When you listen to the fun and whimsical tune it makes the poem appear to be a lovely and happy children’s tale, but the reality is far from that.

Humpty Dumpty

(by the way, in the video you can see how much cartoons have changed over the years!)

As I watch the news each day I am reminded how our story parallels with Humpty’s.

Humpty can be a symbol of humanity. Once whole and undamaged, we had a great fall and now find ourselves splintered, shattered, and in scattered pieces.  We need to be repaired and we need hope.  I find it interesting that the “kings’s horses and the king’s men” cannot adequately put Humpty back to together again.

Often government programs and initiatives are simply not sufficient alone to repair our world.

It is disheartening to read the recent newspaper and see headlines about suicide bombings in Pakistan and Iraq, the tragic hostage situation in Kenya, political and civil unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo, civil war in Syria,  the on-going drama  in the Middle East, and daunting discussions over nuclear dissarmorment.

In addition to these headlines, other our communal falling down has lead to rampant poverty, illiteracy, pollution, growing diseases, mass human rights violations, gang violence, health care crisis, HIV and AIDS epidemics, etc..

Sadly the list goes on and on.

We know that our world has fallen from the wall and lies shattered.

What can put the broken pieces back together again?

Who can make this happen?

YOU CAN.

I believe in the power of volunteerism and the capacity that mobilized individuals and communities can make in our world.

At Orchids, we support  global parters seeking to pick up the broken pieces in their communities and work together to bring healing and wholeness.

You can learn all about the different transformations we are currently involved with and the partners and projects we support.

For Humpty and Humanity….there is HOPE!   Will you be a part of putting the pieces back together again?
